Why Every Startup Needs a Design System Before Series A

UI Debt Compounds Like Any Other Debt
Every inconsistent button is a small loan. Individually harmless, together they slow every later change, because each new screen has to decide between copying an existing inconsistency or inventing another one.
What a Minimum Viable System Looks Like
You do not need a component gallery or a documentation site. You need a short list of decisions nobody has to re-litigate.
- One type scale and one spacing scale, both expressed as tokens
- A single source of colour truth with light and dark pairs decided up front
- Six to eight primitives: field, button, card, badge, nav, table
- One elevation rule and one radius rule applied everywhere
- A written rule for what happens when a screen needs something new
How Teams Adopt It Without a Mandate
Adoption is a convenience problem. Engineers use the system when it is faster than hand-rolling, and stop using it the moment it is not.
- Ship the system in the same repository as the product, never as a separate service
- Make the correct component the path of least resistance in a code snippet
- Migrate screens opportunistically while touching them for real work
- Let product teams propose tokens instead of requesting exceptions
- Track the count of one-off styles as a visible, reducible number
